The chestnut and white of each breed is described as the Blenheim, after the palace of the Duke of Marlborough in England, where spaniels of this color were first developed. Toy spaniels were a common sight around the palaces of Europe during the 17th century and were often portrayed in paintings of the period. The Coton de Tulear is the official dog of Madagascar where, in the past, only royalty and the upper-class could own one.
